March 9, 2015 - visit to the monastery of Saint Frances in Rome.

March 9 is the death anniversary of Saint Frances (Santa Francesca Romana). She died in Rome in what is now the Tor de Specchi monastery near the Theater of Marcellus where she had withdrawn after the sudden death of her two children and the infirmity of her husband. Her life had always been divided between her sense of duty towards the family and her calling to something she had not been able to discern until tragedy hit her.
Saint Frances was canonized in 1608 due to her work with the poor and the sick.
Today her monastery is a splendid example of art between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it houses a series of exquisite frescoes by Antoniazzo Romano, the only truly Roman artist of the Renaissance. The frescoes represent scenes from the life of the saint and surprisingly also include texts in old Roman dialect.
March 9 is also the only day in the year in which it is possible to visit this holy place, to remember this Roman saint and to admire the works of art in it, made by a Roman for a Roman.
